CMMC Documentation Options and Real Costs: DIY vs. Bundles vs. Consultants

The four ways small contractors get CMMC L2 documentation done, with real 2026 prices side by side: DIY hours, $3k-$26k bundles, five-figure consultants, and the Suite.
CMMC documentation: what it really costs - DIY, template bundles, consultants

When each path is actually right

DIY is right when you have a security engineer with real writing time and a genuine desire to own every word. It is how the strongest programs are eventually maintained; it is a brutal way to start from zero against a deadline.

The enterprise bundles are right when you are a 500-person defense manufacturer with a GRC team, mixed frameworks beyond CMMC, and a documentation budget that makes $10,000 a rounding error. They are thorough, mature products, and they assume an operating scale most subs do not have.

A consultant or RPO is right when you have budget but no internal capacity at all, or a deadline so close that buying hours is the only move. Get the deliverables in editable form and a knowledge-transfer session in the SOW, or you will be renting your own compliance program forever.

The Suite is right when you are the shop it was written for: a small, Mac-heavy DIB contractor that needs assessor-legible documentation without a five-figure invoice, and is willing to do its own adaptation work with a system that already speaks Apple Business Manager, Jamf, FileVault, and mSCP.

The honest math

The real comparison is not sticker price; it is sticker price plus your hours plus your risk. DIY minimizes cash and maximizes hours and structural risk. Consultants minimize your hours and maximize cash. Bundles and the Suite sit between, and the difference inside that middle is fit: a platform-neutral library still costs you the translation hours the Suite exists to eliminate, and the Suite would cost a Windows-only shop the same translation in reverse. Buy the thing that was written for your environment.
